Within the structure of Olinda , before the Republic, Paulista was a small town with two communities: Paratibe and Maranguape.
Nowadays the town has a large Industrial Park, but precisely in Paratibe. Besides the industrial activities Paulista also stands out for its tourist trend.
Its monuments, churches, “o Forte de Pau Amarelo” and “Casa Grande” arouse the curiosity and amaze brazilian and foreign visitors.
The coastline enchants the tourists for the beauty of its landscape, coconut trees, beaches, warm and calm waters, which are perfect for a relaxing and invigorating sea bath, tours by catamarans and many other water sports.
One of the brazilian largest water parks is on Maria Farinha Beach, it is called Veneza Water Park and moves a great number of visitors who enjoy enthusiastically its many attractions.

• 1555 – Duarte Coelho Pereira – donee of Capitania of Pernambuco, donated lands to his brother-in-law Jerônimo de Albuquerque, which belonged to Paratibe –Olinda. Inauguration of Paratibe Sugar –Mill-moved by water- located in the Paratibe River.
• 1559 – With the blessing of his brother, D. Pedro Leitão (2nd Archbishop of Brasil)also opened a church in honor to Saint Antonio , located in Jardim Paulista near the Paratibe River.
• 1656 – Construction and inauguration of the Church “Nossa
  Senhora dos Prazeres dos Maranguapes”, mother church of Paulista since 1710. It suffered a mysterious fire in the mid of 1950.
• 1689 – The entire property, including Maranguape´s , was sold to Manoel de Moraes Navarro, called “O Paulista”, as he had come from São Paulo. He commanded part of the government forces which destroyed the Quilombo of Palmares, redoubt of poor whites, blacks and Indians, who dreamed of freedom. The property has become known as “Engenho do Paulista” – The Paulista´s Sugar-Mill, giving rise to the current name of the city – Paulista.
• 1710 a 1715 – The parish of “Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres de Maranguape” was created, which became part of the other parishes of the political jurisdiction of Olinda. When the Republic came upon in no way changed the political-administrative situation of Paulista, which was kept “vila” (town), integrating the jurisdiction of Olinda on which depended economically.
• 19th Century – There were already several plants in the region, including the Timbó one located in the lands belonging to Rodrigues Lima & Co., whose property and the small cotton fabrics (bags) factory were sold to an entrepreneur Swedish general naturalized brazilian – Herman Theodor Lundgren
• 1904 – The political-economic strengthening of the region occurs around 1904, when the Lundgren family purchase most of the shares of a textile factory, belonging to Rodrigues Lima, this combined with the rise of the family members to political posts.
• 1907 –Herman Lundgren dies and the CTP – “Companhia de Tecidos Paulista” – Paulista Fabrics Company – now is run by his sons João Frederico, Alberto and Arthur Lundgren. Later ran by their grandchildren, under the chairmanship of Nilson and Carlos Nogueira Lundgren.
• 1912 – Foundation of São José Cemetery.
• 1930 – Managements were undertaken in order to give autonomy to the municipalty but due to the revolution it was not possible and Paulista continued being a “vila” (town).
• 1935 – The political emancipation of Paulista is signed by Law no. 11 – September 4th.
• 1963 – Construction of the stairs of São José Cemetery.
• Decade of 70 – The city becomes important in the textile are – the result of initial and hard work of Lundgren.
• Decade of 80 – Rebuilding of the wall and façade of São
  José Cemetery.
